Smee wins in Sydney but Thomas is POWRi Champion

POWRi Progress: Sydney April 6th 2014

Smee pounces and takes the final round of the 2013/14 Lucas Oils POWRI Speedcar Super Series at Valvoline Raceway. But it was Queensland Brett Thomas who takes the Championship home to Queensland.

POWRi Champion 2013/14 Brett Thomas

Thomas’s third placing secured the Championship win over Matt Jackson and Troy Jenkins.

After a nervous week when rain threatened and Kiwi ace Brad Mosen joined one of the strongest field to assemble for a POWRI SSS meeting the final night for the POWRi Championship has beaten off Speedways arch villain THE RAIN.,YES!

Starting out of position 5 Thomas was able to take full advantage of late stoppage with two laps to run and gets under Jamie McKinlay and secure the final podium position behind Smee and Matt Smith.

Nathan Smee and Matt Smith raced from the front row with Smee controlling a comfortable lead over Smith to the finish. Smee was fastest during the qualifying in his American Tire and Racing Services Mark Cooper owned car and although Smith tried to keep in touch he never looked likely to threaten.

The POWRi Lucas Oils Night was marred by a nasty tangle between three cars that sent Queensland Scott Jeynes into a wild flip. Once back in the pits Jeynes collapsed in car owners Terry King trailer and need medical support, after the paramedics managed to stabilize Scott they transported the Queenslander to Westmead Hospital for observation.

Brad Mosen’s quick trip across the ditch to sub for Queenslander Scott Wilson was disappointing as he suffered engine problem early and made only a lap or two after starting at the rear in the A main before retiring to the infield .

Wanless wins POWRi round 1

POWRi  Speedcars in AustraliaLucas oil powri series

Entering their ninth year of racing in Australia POWRI under the direction of Ken Jenkins and support from Lucas Oils started the new season at the newly renovated Toowoomba Speedbowl.

Toowoomba with a rich history dating back to the 1800s where pioneering  families worked the land and got dirty as they developed the region into one of our most important rural heartlands . On Saturday night the term “getting your hands dirty “had another meaning .

The 13 contracted drivers were joined by many of the Queensland locals boosting the field to 20 starters to contest 4 by 10 lap heats and the 30 lap  POWRi Feature. It was time to get dirty!

Leading the points after the heats was Queensland’s Matt Greenwood from 5 times Zealand Champion Michael Kendall in the Nelson Motorsports entry.

With a heat win and a lighting fast time of 12.99 in the pole shuffle Todd Wanless in the Brett Thomas owned Spike/Hawke/Illuminated Industries Q69 was in threatening form and would start the Feature from position 2 alongside pole sitter Matt Greenwood.

The early laps pitted the youngster Greenwood against the almost veteran Wanless. Right from the start they tried to out think one another as they fought tenaciously for the race control. Greenwood appeared to have Wanless covered but the continual pressure from the Q89 finally brought the mistake Wanless has been working for.

The Speedbowl track whilst it appeared to be slicking up was still offering a number of groves. With Greenwood out of the way Wanless’s main task over the remaining laps was to cover the fast arriving Tony Abson and Anthony Chaffey.

The race looked well and truly Wanless’s until a late stoppage when Adam Wallis and Wilson came together 8 laps from the finish. The restart offered one last chance for Abson but Wanless after working hard for the race lead and within sight of the POWRI Feature left nothing to chance and bolted away for an impressive win. Along the way Wanless set a new track record at 12.92, he was really in the right mood on the night.

At the end of 30 fantastic laps of POWRi racing Wanless was first Abson second and Anthony Chaffey third.

Queensland’s Ashley Jarvis had a shocking roll over after contact with NSW driver Khaz Fahy. Both driver were ok and only Fahy was able to start in the feature and finished in position 13 one lap down .

The Toowoomba Speedbowl received plenty of applause from teams and drivers for the quality of the track and the running of the event.

The Lucas Oils POWRI Speedcar Super Series now moves onto round two at the Brisbane International Speedway this Saturday night November 9 2013when the Archerfield track opens the pit gates for the touring POWRi teams.
