Larson returns to Indiana Midget Week and Wins

Larson returns to Indiana Midget Week and Wins

larson at MontpelierMontpelier Motor Speedway-Montpelier –Opening race in the Indiana Midget Week showcased the best of the best with Kyle Larson returning for a guest drive with KKM. Larson was joined by Bell and Abreu in an expanded Keith Kunz effort for the Indiana Midget Week opener.

Kyle Larson showed that his presence in NASCAR has not diminished his dirt track talent .driving the 1K Keith Kunz – Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/Parker Store – Target/Bullet/Speedway Toyota Larson won the pole position after the strong qualifying and the win in heat four.. The Larson win came after being passed early by Thorson and then attacking his teammate for the next 23 laps before banging in a slider on lap 25 to move into the race lead with only 5 to run.clauson 2nd Montepelier

Thorson had been under heavy fire from Larson and Clauson but kept the pair searching for the opening while Christopher Bell was working his way out of a difficult start that had Oklahoma charger making up ground from his rear of the field starting position.

What an amazing effort by the Kunz Team to managing 8 race cars, keeping the drivers tuned in must be a massive effort and quite demoralizing f or some of the less experienced teams and driver’s .For Kunz drivers to take two of the three podiums position and the remaining 5 to finish the feature was a super effort.kunz at Montpelier

There can be no doubt that the old saying “the cream always rises to the top “and the podium at Montpelier of Kyle Larson, Bryan Clauson and Christopher Bell certainly underpins that.Larson’s successful return to the Midget was welcomed by the Midget mad crowd but you had to feel for Thorson after taking the race to and past the NASCAR star only to then fall back for a 18th final placing , disappointing but mark our words he will be back up front very quickly.

The Larson win was the 10th for the Kunz team and with the sixth different driver this season. The race win was Larson’s 4th career Indiana Midget Week win and his 13th USAC National Midget win.

The Resource fast time went to Christopher Bell from Chad Boat and Spencer Bayston and heat races wins went to Steve Buckwater, Carson Macedo, Rico Abreu and Kyle Larson.

Post race interview:larson wins USAC Montpelier

Kyle Larson  “That was a lot of fun.” Larson exclaimed.  “I didn’t think the top in (turns) one and two would be that great, but Tanner was able to rip around me.  I knew I was a lot better than him in (turns) three and four.  I just couldn’t quite figure out turn two.  I was getting beat pretty bad over there.  I don’t know if it just got cleaned off or what, but my grip off of turn two got a little better and I could stay closer to Tanner and then, eventually, throw the slider.  I had so much fun, though!  Thirty laps fly by in these races.  It’s so enjoyable to run with Keith (Kunz) and Pete (Willoughby).  They deserve all the attention that they’ve been getting the last few years.”

Bryan Clauson “It became a race between me and Kyle to see who could clear Tanner first,” Clauson explained.  “I got a run and threw something at him and Tanner got into me when he came back across and I let Kyle get by us.  We just started getting tight there at the end.  It might not have made a difference because it got tough to run once the track got real curby, but second is a solid start to “Indiana Midget Week.”

Christopher Bell “Staying out of trouble was huge,” Bell said with a sigh of relief.  “Everybody kept crashing each other and it got me on the first lap.  But once I got back there, they kept running into each other and I didn’t really feel like I passed a whole lot of cars.  I was good at the end; it just got to be so fast around the top that you couldn’t really slide anybody unless you had a big run like Kyle did.  I worked around the bottom really well, so that helped, but we just needed them to bottle up on the top one more time.”

Both Bell and Larson will be back for round two at Gas City but we understand Abreu will return for the Bloomington race with Bell .

Shane Stewart beats the Boss at the Burg

Shane Stewart the BurgLawrenceburg Speedway May 30th and the Outlaw field grew into one of the strongest for the year with the inclusion of Kyle Larson, Rico Abreu and Christopher Bell. While the lure of the pavement has been high on their agendas the heavy hitter are keen to return to their roots of the Speedway Dirt. What an amazing race, take your eyes of the race for just a moment to get a glimpes of what was happening mid pack and the race lead would change .At first it was Pittman to the lead then Stewart and Abreu began their private battle at the head of the pack. One then the other would lead, what’s a slider       between friends, it the way it’s “gotta “be I guess! One causality of the battle up front was Daryn Pittman and as the battle raged he fell back into the pack. Pittman soon became engulfed by Gravel and Bell and then had Larson looking to gain a spot .Abreu and bell burg

.With 10 laps to run it was Abreu in the lead then a slider and Stewart gets back his lead. Now with 7 laps to go and Abreu is back in the lead before the Larson Marks driver bangs the Aussie built Cool chassis back into the lead .The pair continue to disagree over who should lead and it went back and forth.I did not know where to look, with no live stream the twitter feed was going nuts it was a race to keep up.

The end was near and with two to go Stewart starts to find a gap over Abreu and now Abreu was  in danger from the fast arriving Gravel. Stewart gets the white and Gravel presents Abreu with a slider and gets that second spot and charges after Stewart, but Stewart would not be denied his second win at the Burg and third win for the season. In taking the win Stewart beat team boss Larson.to bag bragging rights for the night !Burg podium

After leading early Pittman managed to regroup and finish in 5th place just behind Kyle Larson in the Paul Silva’s #57s.

Paul McMahan’s recent nightmares continued when running fifth he  jumped the cushion getting into turn1 and flipped and was done for the night. McMahan was shaken but not stirred !

Kerry Madsen back in Victory lane at Knoxville

Kerry Madsen back in Victory lane at KnoxvilleMadsen Knoxville

Kerry Madsen has been missing from the World of Outlaw roster for the last few races returns to winning form last night at NSL show at Knoxville .The Knoxville based team has been running a limited Outlaw campaign this year and after two disappointing runs at Jackson Motorplex and the Badlands Silver Shoot out the Knoxville victory will keep his legion of fans on a high .

With the American Custom Wheels livery replaced by the Keneric wrap  the team is making the most with reduced financial support , possibly the reason behind the limited Outlaw schedules .Cutting back on Outlaw appearance does not necessarily make racing easier .Knoxville attracts big fields and making A Mains can be more difficult  .Knoxville is full of Outlaw winners and of course the locals known their way around the fabulous venue better than most .Madsen the 2015 Track Champion is no stranger to Knoxville .Kerry Madsen329

Davey Heskin was the fast qualifier, Kerry Madsen timed in 4th quick. The other Australians times were, Tatnell 6th, Ian Madsen 12th and Scott Boucki 21st quick.

The 25 lap race was all Madsen and the Australian Champion was never ever under threat and won comfortably from Dusty Zomer and Craig Dollanski.

Kerry Madsen post race interview: “I ran it as hard as I could wide open,” said Kerry in Victory Lane. “I found the bottom down there, and I was comfortable with that. It was a really quick pace for a 25-lap race. The car was fantastic; I just can’t thank the guys enough. I pushed hard with the cars I had behind me. This is such a tremendous place. I can’t say enough about what it does for sprint car racing. It’s fantastic! I want to thank Brownell’s for stepping up tonight and its great what they do with the vets.”

McFadden’s luck deserts the Aussie in Ohio

McFadden’s luck deserts the Aussie in Ohio

McFadden ready againJames McFadden has just completed the first of his two events in his US tour with the Joe Gaerte Engines 3G.Luck certainly deserted the Australian gun.First up the 3G trucked into Atticia Raceway Park to face field full of top guns from the All Star regulars. The Ohio based group is among the toughest racing the circuits anywhere in the US.

McFadden was joined in the race by two other Australians, Stuart Williams’s #46AU and Sean Zemunik #27Z.McFadden started well with a strong heat win and secured his start in the A Main. The field was stacked with class headed by the low rider Dale Blaney and Rico Abreu. This was tough company first up and McFadden should not be disappointed with his effort even though he failed to finish.McFadden hauler

Right from the start McFadden was in the thick of the battle. McFadden and the fifth starting Brady Bacon were swapping places. McFadden was currently in P3 and would soon have the low rider throwing sliders at him. There was some hard racing between the two, trading sliders until contact was made that forced Blaney back into the field and ended with McFadden going off track and causing a race caution .McFadden race was done and he would DNF but Blaney would return in 10th and work past the entire field to record his 130th career ASCoC and 18th Attica win.

After the race Blaney apologized to McFadden .Dale Blaney “That was a hell of a win, hell of a race. Apologize to James for getting into him. We were racing hard. 1st I’ve gotten better in awhile”DB

McFadden gave as well as he received and as we have come to expect from McFadden he traded slider for slider with the all time ASCoC winner.McFadden and Joe Gaerte might have been a little down as they packed but with an ounce of luck it could have been Blamey’s bad luck but they have over night to regroup as they head to Fremont to compete with the Fast 410 Series.Dale Blaney

Attica results:

Fremont the next day and more disappointment as the 3G failed in the opening heat forcers the Australian to sit out the night.  I f I had been a sponsor on the #3G I would have gone home from Attica full of admiration for the Aussie and I am certain the Ohio race fans will be looking forward to the time McFadden put the 3G through its paces  at any of the Ohio tracks

Pittman stops the Posse at New Egypt

Pittman wins New Egypt

New Egypt- New Jersey You won’t see a pyramid or a camel but what you saw was a determined Daryn Pittman going about collecting his fourth win in succession at new Egypt .With the Posse looking to have the Outlaws eating their dust around New Egypt. Right from qualifying Hodnett looked like he would dominate the night, posting fast time during qualifying and leading every lap of his heat and the dash. The pill draw was a 0 so it ensures Hodnett’s good early pace would be rewarded with pole for the 30 lap a main.

Hodnett had the Lelands.com/Eagle Steel No. 27, working nicely out front and controlled the race right up until lap 16 when the three times Jersey Outlaw Classic winner found fast way round the top to first pass Mark Smith in the Mach 1 Chassis No. M1 before he grabbed the point from Hodnett.Hodnett fast time

Once into the race lead Pittman built a gap between the chasing Posses but the lap traffic slowed the #15 and towards the race ends Hodnett found the top and started to close in on the Great Clips #15.The New Egypt event was the successive night that Hodnett had lost the race lead late and had to be content with the runner up spot.

Post race interviews :

Daryn Pittman “I’ve been really frustrated with myself with how many front-row starts I’ve had this year and as few wins,” Pittman said. “I got up this morning and thought ‘Man, third is where I want to start’ – I just had that feeling this morning that if I start third I was going to win.”Things went our way and we ended up starting third.”Pittman fast

“We haven’t been struggling by any means, but we needed a win,” Pittman said. “This really makes me feel good, and makes them feel good going back home to Charlotte this week. We’ve had some pretty bad finishes but hopefully this can erase that and we can get on a better streak of just running up front.”I felt like I was struggling [later in the race]…Those last four laps, I didn’t feel like I made any of them very good, so I wasn’t breathing good until I saw them throw the checkered.”

Greg Hodnett “I didn’t go up there until he passed and then I realized there was a whole other track to run on. We kind of caught him again in traffic and passed a couple lapped cars, but we just needed to keep running. He was definitely the faster car; we just needed him to slow down a little bit through some lapped traffic.”Mark Smith

Mark Smith “”I was hoping to come down here and just get a top five, but we got a top three and we’re up here on the podium.” Smith said. “I kept trying different lanes to try and make some time up on Greg Hodnett], then I heard somebody, that ended up being Daryn.”He was a lot better than us and drove by us. We were about the same speed as Greg, but we just couldn’t go through lapped traffic like Daryn could”

Kerry Madsen’s quest for Silver lost at Badlands

Kerry Madsen’s quest for Silver lost at Badlands

Kerry Madsen329

Badlands Motor Speedway – North Dakota.  Australian Sprintcar Champion Kerry Madsen’s decision to miss the last two Out Law events in preference to taking in the opening night at the NSL meet at Jackson Motorplex and the $100,000.00 Silver Shoot out at Badlands Motor Speedway the following night was not the big Silver Dollar earner the team had hoped for .

The opener at Jackson Motorplex for the NSL show had Kerry’s younger brother and current Knoxville Champion Ian joining him in the quest for the $10,000 winner’s purse. The inclusion of Out Law veterans Dollansky and Lasoski and Tim Kaeding would certainly make this win as difficult as any Outlaw event.

Craig Dollansky dominated the A main and won easily from the “Dude” Lasoski and Ian Madsen .Kerry Madsen followed Ian across the line .

The team now made theirBadlands way to Badland Motor Speedway where the lure of the $100,000 Silver Shoot Out would guarantee the winner 166 pieces of Silver valued at $27,000.The badlands purse was almost three times that of a normal Outlaw win.

Fast time in qualifying went to Lynton Jeffrey over Dusty Zomer.Heat winners on the night were Mark Dobmeier, Billy Balog, Terry McCarl, Brad Loyet and Paige Polyak .Kerry Madsen ran second in his heat behind Brad Loyet

In the 35 lap a main Kerry Madsen started from P6 and had moved up through the field to sit second behind Dobmeier but would find lapped traffic and get caught in a tangle with a back maker spinning and to quote Madsen “Heartbreaker, up to 2nd from 6th looking good. Would have been a chance for the win and got caught up in a lapped car spin “

Dobmeier started deep in the field and was clearly the fastest car in the pack and pulled away from pole sitter McCarl midway in the race. The four times Track Champion made certain of his win on the final restart when he quickly pulled away from McCarl and Tim Kaeding with six laps left in the book.Dommeier

An elated Domeier collected the 166 pieces of Silver ($27,000) Terry McCarl 88 pieces of Silver ($13,720) and Tim Kaeding 83 pieces of Silver ($10,916). The Silver Shootout is the highest paying race in South Dakota history and the event pulled in 47 410 Sprintcars and with the Silver on offer it is easy to see the attraction.

Race results : A-Main, 35 laps: Mark Dobmeier, Terry McCarl, Tim Kaeding, Justin Henderson, Brad Loyet, Lynton Jeffrey, Bill Balog, Aaron Reutzel, Logan Forler, Paul Nienhiser, Kaley Gharst, Ryan Bickett, Austin McCarl, Paige Polyak, Jade Hastings, Wade Nygaard, Matt Juhl, Dylan Peterson, Robby Wolfgang, Kerry Madsen, Dusty Zomer, Austin Pierece, Cody Hansen, Cory Mack, Brad Loyet.

Schatz escapes the Posse’s lasso at Weedsport

Schatz escapes the Posse’s lasso at WeedsportSchatz weedsport

Weedsport ,May 22nd  The battle continued at Weedsport and the Posse was strengthen by the appearance of Greg Hodnett. All the talk continued around the Outlaw Posse Challenge but it was Logan Schuchart who took control of the 35 lap A main for 31 laps.

Schatz struggled  early and missed a start in the dash. Starting in P9 the seven times Champ had plenty of work ahead.Even though Schatz had had indifferent form this year he sits clearly in second place in the series and coming off a last start win at the Grove the Bad Boys /Chevrolet Performance #15 looked a threat from the green. Quickly moving through the pack Schatz had made the top 5 by the half way point of the race. Once into second the #15 ate up the gap quickly to close on Schuchart.Logan Schuchart

Schuchart had the hopes of the PA crowd on his shoulders as the Hanover hotshot went looking for his maiden Outlaw win. When Schatz has you in his sights it signals danger and despite withstanding all other challenges he could not withstand the final Schatz charge and the racer from Fargo North Dakota moved into the race lead with 4 laps to run.

The disappointment was evident when Schuchart spoke with the press .This was his second runner up spot with the Outlaws this year but the racer from Hanover is close to his maiden Outlaw win, it’s not far off judging by his form this year.Following Schatz and Schuchart home was the ever constant David Gravel in his CJB Big Game #5.Gravel has been steady all year and is quietly moving up the standing with 2 wins, 14 top 5 and 20 top 10 finishes.

The Outlaws will next go around on May 24 at New Egypt, New Jersey and Schatz will trail Brad Sweet by slender 39 points and the message to Sweet is clear the Bad Boy is coming and FAST.

Driver quotes

Donny Schatz “I got all the faith in the world in this race team – Tony [Stewart] has assembled an awesome group of guys,” Schatz said, as raindrops started to fall from the sky. “These guys are unbelievable and we have a lot of fun together. I’m sure they’re ready to get off the east coast because I have been riding in the truck with them and I think they’re ready to get rid of me for a while and have a break.podium weedsport

“We did go back to the notes from last year, but for some reason we can’t go back to that stuff, it doesn’t seem to work,” Schatz said. “If you look at tonight, I think the track record was broke by 23 cars, compared to last year we were rolling around a second slower, so that changes the dynamic of the car a little. You just have to stay on top of it and I have a great group of guys to do that.

“I don’t know if we have hit our stride yet, like I’ve said, we gain in one area and make ourselves better but we might lose a little in other spots. It’s a challenge, definitely fun at the moment trying to get a handle on it.”

Logan Schuchart “I just didn’t have the car at the end, we started to get too loose,” Schuchart said. “It’s a great run; the guys did a great job. We came up one spot short but it’s nothing to hang our heads about. We have a great team and we’re learning – but we’re a little disappointed.

“I couldn’t tell you [what happened at the end],” Schuchart said. “I got really lose, and before I even saw a numbered car beside of me, I knew it was the 15 car. He’s really hard to beat on these types of racetracks and I feel like these are the types of tracks I shine on – when it gets slick.

“These guys are tough, so to run second against these guys and just keep getting better is what’s importantGravel interview

David Gravel “We’ve been running really well, then went to PA and struggled a couple of nights, so it’s good to back on the podium,” Gravel said. “It was a tricky track here tonight, and we were good at the end of the race. I got to thank all my guys – Austin, Derek, Barry – they worked their butts off on the long haul here.”

Kingshott is 6th but Bayston wins Macon

KIngshott ready at Macon

Macon Speedway Illinois was the second of 13 races on the Kingshott racings tour and after the disappointment of the gremlin invaded Esslinger at Fayette Speedwaythe team had the #24 cracking during hot laps.

Dyane Kingshott was pushed out for heat 2 and his first go at the POWRi pack. Kingshott drove with caution aware that the cushion at Macon is fast and has been the undoing of many as they worked the cushion to the limit. Kingshott finished fourth and was guaranteed his first Main event on only his second try.

Starting well back in 15th position Kingshott  manage his race carefully in the face of at least 12 cautions. Aggressive driving, tangles and loops were the order of the day with the Fayette winner Macedo the first to cause a stoppage when he spun on the opening lap.

Bayston was the early leader but it was not  long before Robinson ,Dum and Brown tangled  pushing Daum to the rear of the field for the restart.Daum was the charger working his way back as high as third before again getting involved in other drivers problems that would end his night .

Kingshott with drama all around  remained calm taking advantage of others misfortunes to gradually move through the field.Kingshott’s night was almost undone when Neumann and King got together forcing Kingshott and the recovering Macedo to spin to protect both their cars and their race chances

With just 7 laps left to race Kingshott had moved into the top 10 and by race end would secure a sixth place finish in his first US Feature. While all the drama was happening around Kingshott Spencer Bayston had cleared out and was unchallenged to record another win for the Kunz Toyota Team. It was a successful two nights for the Toyota boys with Macedo winning at Fayette and now Bayston on top at Macon.Bayston wins Macon

While KKM took the honors the boy from Bunbury Western Australia will head to race three of his US tour  Montpellier Motor Speedway full of confidence  and enthusiasm when he meets up with the USAC team and POWRi drivers  in Montpellier for six nights of successive racing starting May 31,
