Leading the Kunz Toyota Team in the absents of both Bell and Abreu Tanner Thorson leaped over the competition to secure both Gold Crown Features with dramatically different performances .Night one of the two night show was a flag to flag win with such domination that set up expectation that the main 40 lapper the following night would be a certain victory for the youngster from Minden Nevada.
Thorson’s win on the Championship night was spectacular. Right from the first heat and through to the dash Thorson had pocketed top points putting his Kunz/Toyota on the pole for the 40 Lap $10,000 to win a main.
Thorson was first over the stripe and headed the field as all 24 drivers were locked into the race for the Gold Crown Title and the $10,000 purse.

For 23 of the 40 laps Thorson was in control, Zach Daum had provided some challenges to the #67 but it was the cushion that forced the change in the race lead when Thorson bounced over the cushion wrecking his right rear tyre. The stoppage allowed Thorson’s team to make the wheel change and he was able to restart in 19th position.
17 laps to run, $10,000 to win and Thorson immediately set about reclaiming lost ground. This was turning into one crazy race. Four reds and cautions would help Thorson as he charged back through the field
Tyler Thomas, Darren Hagan and Kevin Thomas Jr all had chances to close in on the race lead but misadventure on the cushions would send each of them over ruining any chance they had of chasing down the race lead from Daum.
Thorson was relentless, charging onto the back on Daum’s Toyota #5 and on lap 39 started to build his race winning move .On the final restart Daum claimed the point quickly and worked towards the cushion while Thorson continued to power around the top with the hammer down and by the time the white was displayed Thorson had his nose in front and headed across the finishing stripe .620 seconds ahead of a disappointed Daum.

This had been an inspired and calculated drive by Thorson and takes him to within 24 points of the lead in the race for the USAC National Honda Midget Championship. Three races left in the season and lots of points still on offer

Driver post race interviews

Tanner Thorson “I was really mad at myself for making that mistake early in the race. I think it may have been going down already, but my crew got the tire changed and got me back out there to give us a chance. We’ve got a pretty amazing team and race cars to be able to do something like that. I figured Daum would slide across the bottom on the restart, so I knew I had to get my momentum there and try him on the other end. It’s been such a crazy year – I got my first USAC win and then got hurt, missed some races, but now we’ve gotten hot again and started chomping on the point lead to get back in it. It’s been a roller-coaster, but now we’ve won a big race and I’m ready for more,” Thorson said.

Zach Daum “This one hurts. This is basically a hometown race for me, and I come here all the time when we’re not racing ourselves. I’ve had so many near misses here, but I’ve never won one. Obviously, they were really good, but those late-race reds just cost us so much. I felt no pressure through the race, really, and then we couldn’t get a stretch without a yellow or red. That’s racing, though, and sometimes you’re the guy who’s the sitting duck out front. I slid myself on the restart, but he obviously got the momentum to get me on the other end,” Daum said.

Chris Windom “I just had a little stumble on restarts that wouldn’t let me get the run I needed to get in a good position on those. I was too snug on entry to run the cushion, so I kept working the bottom and hoping those guys would make mistakes, which is what they were doing. Obviously, Tanner was on a rail and was better than all of us, but I gave a big slider on Daum for second that he crossed over. I’m glad Rusty Kunz and Joe Dooling let me drive their car this weekend, and hopefully we can do it again,” Windom said.

After the disappointments of Lincoln, Clauson and Jerry Coons Jr were on a mission to reverse their Lincoln results.
Kevin Thomas Jr leaves Lincoln just 10 points ahead of Tracy Hines with the defending Champion a further42 points adrift.
The next USAC event is scheduled for September 4-5 at Tri-City Speedway Granite City, Illinois for the 7th Annual Gold Crown Midget Nationals.
With only 5 races left to decide the National Honda Midget Title the “Gold Crown Nationals “ must be a points grabbing exercise for those chasing the Title .Abreu is on a roll and has his script is already in draft !

Clauson might feel he was a little stiff but Jerry Coons Jr was wrecked after car problems forced him from the race lead for the second time this season .A fuel nozzle broke four laps from the finish. Abreu was magic beating Clauson to cushion and the drag race to the flag ensured the Kunz #97 the top spot on the podium in successive races.

Abreu stopped on the front stretch in front of a loud Lincoln Speedway crowd to celebrate his win in the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports – Toyota TRD #97 Bullet/Speedway Toyota.
Over the last two races Abreu has put his defense of his National Honda Midget Title back on track and has closed in a the lead of teammate Kevin Thomas Jr

Rico Abreu “I knew he would hear me eventually up there, but I was making sure when I got to him that I would be gone fast enough. Bryan moved back down after he got Jerry, and I just got a couple really perfect laps up there where I didn’t get up too high and into any loose stuff. I knew it was tricky down low; we were having trouble keeping it where it needed to be. You could really hammer it up top there when it cleaned off and got wide, and that was about as fun as it gets at the end. He is a clean racer and left me just enough room for us to get through there. It’s awesome to be out here and have that crowd reaction; it makes this whole trip worthwhile to see these tracks and race in front of such great fans,” Abreu said.
Bryan Clauson “I guess sometimes you make the wrong decision and end up getting beat, and that’s pretty much how tonight went. I felt like I was working awfully hard up top to get by Jerry, so after I went by him, I guess I left the door open for him to get me. It was a lot of fun racing with Jerry, and it’s cool to come to a place like this and show them what midget racing is all about,” Clauson said.
Hines “I saw Rico go to the top, so I jumped up there too and it got us up to third. We got into that crash in the heat race, and had to play catch-up from there for the rest of the night. We probably left a little on the table with the car with replacing other parts and an issue with a bleeder during the B. We got it all fixed and ready, so it was a good run from there,” Hines said

Rico Abreu led home a Kunz/Toyota 1, 2, 3 at Path Valley when USAC and ARDC co sanctioned the Pennsylvania Midget Show.
In taking Midget win number four for the year Abreu dragged back points in his effort to retain his National Honda Midget Championship
Tracey Hines rolled into Path Valley Speedway Park in the Championship lead but departed after his 6th place finish saw his lead taken over by Kevin Thomas Jr.The rivalry between the four Kunz teammates ensure a hectic early pace.
Tracy Hines was the first to race into the lead but Thorson assumed the race lead before the end of the opening lap .Abreu quickly moved into second but most of the attention was on Christopher Bell as he charged from P 13 to 6th within the first three laps .The race suddenly turned into a battle between the Kunz teammate with them running top four in the field

Bell charged past teammate Thomas and began to chase after Thorson and Abreu. Trying to break the Toyota stranglehold on the race Bryan Clauson started too moved quickly but by lap 13 his race was done as he slowed with electrical problems .Clauson’s problem would benefit Abreu as he quickly disposed of Thorson on the restart and began to consolidate his leading position.
Now it was Thomas’s time to challenge and in the process both he and Thorson came together forcing the #67 to spin and bring out another caution. With Thorson restarting from the back.

The restart and Thomas charged up to Abreu and gained the lead with a huge slider on lap 19, his lead was brief as another caution was out for a back maker who had spun.
The restart with 11 laps to run had Abreu back in the lead and it was now Bell’s turn to mix up running order. Quickly putting Thomas behind him he started to breakdown Abreu’s lead.
Abreu and Bell would exchange the race lead until a further caution came out for a spinning 6th running Tyler Thomas.
Rico worked the lead from the restart and ran the last 5 laps unchallenged .Bell crossed .852 seconds behind with Kevin Thomas completing yet another podium sweep for the Kunz/Toyota /Curb/-Agajanian team. Christopher Bell had passed 11 cars during his chase of Abreu and for all his earlier problems Tanner Thorson would recover with a strong 9th place finish.

Driver interviews :

Rico Abreu “It’s awesome to be out here and be able to win in front of fans like these. I’ve been really looking forward to this week racing on dirt in Pennsylvania, so hopefully I can win a few and have fun. It’s great to race hard like that with your teammates. Being the leader the last half of that race, you’re just not sure where to go. Christopher was dive-bombing me, but I didn’t know exactly how he was running. After he passed me, he went straight to the top of three and four right before the caution came out, so I knew that’s where he was running. Races play out that way sometimes. They worked in my favor tonight,” Abreu said of his 12th career National Midget win, which tied him for 53rd all-time among the group of Gene Force, Bobby Grim, Danny Caruthers, Jeff Gordon, Ron Shuman, Russ Gamester, and Kyle Larson.

Christopher Bell “I could really just go anywhere early in that race, and with some marbles in the middle of the track, they were going high and low so I just went through the middle. I found open lanes early and that helped get up through there. The yellows were so frustrating tonight. Just when I got my momentum or had a chance to pass for the lead and get away, there one would come. Hopefully they work out better for me next time,” Bell said.

Kevin Thomas Jr “I was searching early to find someplace to run, and then Bell railed me up high and I knew we had to get going. I showed Rico the top when I went by him, and the caution to put me back behind him hurt. I got a bad restart and lost that spot to Bell, and beyond that we were pretty close in speed. I hate saying it was a good points night, but we had a solid night, and our goal is to win a championship, ultimately. You have to take advantage of nights like these,” Thomas, Jr. said.

Abreu hits the spot with Pepsi National victory.

Rico Pepsi champAbreu hits the spot with Pepsi National victory.
Angell Park, Sun Prarie was the venue for the 34th running of the Pepsi midget Nationals co sanctioned by USAC-POWRi and BMARA . Most of the top peddlers were signed in, one notable exception was Christopher Bell but the Keith Kunz’s team of Abreu, Thorson and Kevin Thomas Jr offered a challenge for those seeking the Pepsi National Title.
Bryan Clauson set fast time during qualifying ahead of Rico Abreu fresh from his pavement win in the K&N Pro Series Late Model at Columbus Speedway , Kevin Thomas Jr was third fastest .

Rookie Ryan Robinson found himself on the front row with Thorson but was unable to beat Thorson to the point and had to settle in at second for the first circuit of the Angell park track. Is was not long before fast qualifier Clauson had run past Robinson and started to close on Thorson.
The Clauson challenge expired on lap 4 out with rear tyre problems forcing the officials to bring out the first caution of the evening. Clauson would go to the work area and return with the task ahead of the #63 Rusty Kunz/Joe Dooling entry.

Billy Balog, Tucker klaasmeyer would be responsible for cautions during the race while a big flip by Tracy Hines would see the first and only red for the night. Hines wild flip in turns three and four would end his Pepsi charge , racecar knocked about but Hines walked away thankfully.
The race to the flag over the latter stages of the race was a Kunz /Toyota battle between teammates and right up until the final laps it looked very much like Thorson would take the win, sitting back in second Abreu used the final corner to slide under his younger teammate and gain a narrow but decisive win.
Kevin Thomas Jr completed the Kunz/Toyota podium ahead of Clauson who had worked back into contention and Darren Hagan.

Drivers comments :
Rico Abreu ““That was a lot of fun,” stated Rico Abreu. “Keith Kunz and Pete Willoughby gave me a fantastic car. I kind of stole Tanner’s thunder there, but he just keeps getting better and better. It’s one of those races where you want to be running second. You can search around a lot more running second. It’s a lot of fun running with these guys. I enjoy racing all these cars. It just keeps making me better and better.”

Tanner Thorson “I wouldn’t want to lose it to anyone more than Rico,” commented Tanner Thorson. “He definitely earned it. I heard he was working the top and I was out there in the front trying to do my deal. I knew someone was there and I was holding my breath the last five laps; I could see him. I didn’t know if it was him or KT because they’re both fast. But, hat’s off to this team to put another Keith Kunz podium out there.”
Kevin Thomas Jr “To be on the podium is pretty nice,” said Kevin Thomas, Jr. “Keith and Pete always preach to me about the bigger picture. It’s just a blessing that this team gives us the best cars you could drive. Hat’s off to Rico and Tanner. I saw Rico slide Tanner there on the last lap and it was fun from where I was sitting, but unfortunately it was third.”

So…..

Following the Australian summer the team will pack their bags and head to the USA for a month long tour taking in both the Powri and USAC Midget weeks a hopefully getting in a few other races along the way.

Indiana Midget Week night four falls to Abreu.

Indiana Midget Week night four falls to Abreu.

Abreu at the Burg

Abreu at the Burg

Night four at Lawrenceburg and Rico Abreu bags another win for the Kunz/Toyota Team .The Team has already won this week with Thorson and Bell with only the Rusty Kunz/Joe Dooling Esslinger of Clauson breaking the domination

.
Abreu had to deal first with team mate Kevin Thomas before using the slide on Jerry Coons Jr on lap 20 .Coons had held the race lead from lap 12 and maintained the race lead from two restarts following cautions for Tracy Hines and then a lap later after Alex Bright’s went skywards in turns one and two following a monster flip in his Great Clips Esslinger.Bright managed to walk away with injury despite the furry of accident.

Abreu always seemed to have control of the Feature although a serious dispute was raging between Tyler Thomas, Kevin Thomas Jr and Clauson for the second podium spot.
Tyler Thomas has had pace all week and with Abreu clear out front the American Custom Wheels Esslinger locked his runner up position while Clauson finally got the better of Thomas Jr for the final podium position

Rico Abreu scored his ninth- career series win to tie Chuck Gurney, Tony Elliott and Billy Boat for 72nd on the all time list.
The sight of the four Keith Kunz/Toyota/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports Team cars is intimidating at all the major midget shows.

Oh what a feeling !

Oh what a feeling !

Rico Abreu “I love the big moments, and it looks like we’re headed for another one tomorrow going against Bryan at his favorite track for the Midget Week title. It’s cool to come out on top tonight and hang in there with him; I know how much it would mean to me to win it, and I’m looking forward to tomorrow night. We’ve been a top-three car all week and late-race restarts have been killing me, honestly. We got racing with Jerry and Bryan, and it was hard to tell who was going to win the thing,” Abreu said.

A determined Abreu

A determined Abreu

Tyler Thomas“I had an absolute blast tonight. We had an awesome race track to race on, and we have all week, to allow us to race our way up through the pack. We were good up on the curb and could go down and run the bottom a little bit too. We got to racing too hard with Clauson and Thomas to be able to make a run at the lead, but that was some of the most fun racing I’ve gotten to do. We couldn’t quite get away from them on the last restart to get our momentum up to try to make a run at Rico. I’m proud of how much better we’ve made our car after switching to Spike Chassis this year, and we’ve got it rolling now and I’m comfortable. We’re looking forward to Kokomo tomorrow and couldn’t be happier with how everything is going so far, but I’m ready for that first win,” Thomas said.

Bryan Clauson “We weren’t quite good enough to battle for the win tonight, and we had to pull out all the tricks to put ourselves up on the podium. The DNF in the heat race hurt us in the Midget Week points, but we’re going to Kokomo tomorrow with a shot at it. There’s no place I’d rather have a winner-take-all race for the Midget Week crown,” Clauson said.

Clauson parks it at Lincoin Park for USAC Midget Week

Putnamville, Indiana.……Bryan Clauson used every inch of Lincoln Park Speedway on Thursday night to drive from tenth for the win in Round 2 of “Indiana Midget Week.” The two-time Honda National Midget champion made it 34 career wins in the division with the30-lap winning drive.
Tyler Thomas got to the early lead from the pole, but Rico Abreu was building steam on the high side and roared by on the cushion to take the lead on lap three. His teammate and the night’s ProSource “Fast Qualifier” Tanner Thorson, fresh off his first National Midget win on Wednesday night, was coming along with Abreu as they took over the 1-2 spots.
Clauson was on the move to fourth as the first caution hit, with Christopher Bell showing he was on the charge, too, as he sat ninth after starting 16th. Clauson disposed of Thorson for second on the restart, and it appeared an Abreu-Clauson duel was shaping up for the top spot. Behind them, Tracy Hines and Darren Hagen both got by Thorson and were racing for third.

Thorson got turned around on lap seventeen to bring out the next caution, and Bell had just broken into the top-five with a slick move to split two cars down the frontstretch. On the restart, Clauson began to work Abreu hard for the lead as Bell moved up to third. Clauson finally had the momentum he needed on lap 22 as he threw a big slider into turn-three for the lead. At the same time, Bell crossed under Abreu and had the runner-up spot.
On lap 23, as he was racing back through the field, Thorson got pinched into the frontstretch wall and flipped wildly up and over turn-one. He crawled out of the car but was held for observation. From there, Clauson held Bell at bay as Hines took over third down the stretch.
Bell looked to have a run at Clauson as they came to the white, trying to gain enough momentum on the high side to mount a charge, but he pushed slightly in turn-two, ending his bid at the win. Clauson made it win number one on the year for himself and the Curb Records – Dooling Machine #63 Spike/Stanton Mopar.
“This week is special to anybody, but especially to somebody like me who grew up here, the Midget Week and Sprintweek wins mean a lot. I don’t get to race full-time in this series now, but we’re trying to get this team an owner’s championship, too. Rusty (Kunz) has these things good, especially when things get slick and technical. We weren’t quite as good as those guys at the top of three and four, but we could move around and that gave us the chance to go by them. This place can get so technical, and you have to be close to perfect to have a chance. It’s a fun place, and a real driver’s race track,” Clauson said.
Bell, who crashed violently last year at Lincoln Park and was nursing some bruises from Wednesday night’s crash at Gas City, came home second in the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports – Toyota TRD #71 Bullet/Speedway Toyota. He earned the B&W Auto Mart “Hard Charger Award” for his drive to the front.
“It was a really tough deal tonight. It was so technical, and you couldn’t run it too hard and make mistakes with that curb being so firm. I didn’t get a good lap down in qualifying, and that buried us, but Bryan was back there pretty far too. I could use the bottom through one and two to get some guys, and we could roll the cushion nicely on the other end. We’ve had to pass a ton of cars in the last week, but we just have to be better early in the night,” Bell said.
Hines gave himself a 25-point gap in the National Midget standings with another podium finish aboard the Parker Machinery – Turbines, Inc. #24 Spike/Stanton Toyota.
“Tonight was a difference between making good laps down low and trying to wait out the mistakes they made up high. They were a bit better, and we got back to about fifth at one point before taking advantage of some bobbles to get back to third. We had some things off for the race last night, but we got those fixed and had another good night tonight,” Hines said.
