Saldana and Motter at Charlotte

Saldana and Motter at Charlotte

In what is most likely his last outing in the Motter Equipment #71M Joey Saldana dominated the final night of the World Finals at Charlotte Dirt Track.
With the end of the three year relationship drawing near due to funding problems Saldana and his team show what they had promised for most of the year .Clearly the fasted during qualifying throughout the year the team has been unable to convert those opportunities into race wins .Sunday at Charlotte it came together and how !
To start Joey punched out his 17th quick time for the year backed it up by winning the dash then leading flag to flag in the 30 lap final.
Challenged early by Logan Schuchart then having to be concerned about the approaching Shane Stewart and Daryn Pittman the #71 Motter Equipment driver raced the cushion and swallowed up the laps to stamp his authority over this classy final race field. Restarts, traffic and challengers had no answer as the Brownsburg Bullet drove faultlessly to the stripe leaving fans and the team to rue those lost early season chances.

The win was a fitting reward for a driver and Team that had given everything throughout a tough and demanding Outlaw Tour .Down many times but never out they fired back at Charlotte in the last race for the 2015 season and top it off on his wedding anniversary it all came together.
Saldana’s year looks like this, three wins, 37 top five finishers, 54 top 10 finishes and sixth in the Championship standing.
Joey Saldana
“This is awesome,” Saldana said. “We’ve really had a good car this year – just too many DNFs and too many mistakes on my part. We’ve had a great car and led a lot of laps and tonight just showed how good our team is.”
“I don’t know what to say,” Saldana said. “It’s just awesome – awesome experience today and an awesome time to be a part of the World of Outlaws. I love what I do.”

This is Schatz’s season 31 wins, 60 top 5 and 70 top 10 finishes
Donny Schatz
“(Tony Stewart) has done a fantastic job of assembling the best people to do their job and he lets us do our thing,” Schatz said. “The guys on the race team, the Bad Boy Buggies/Chevrolet Performance team, do a phenomenal job. The way they maintain the car, the way they set the car up, just the way they attack things. It’s definitely an honor to drive that thing. There are days I can’t get my job done and they carry me. That’s what it takes, that’s what teamwork is and that’s why we’re standing up here as champions.”
“We’re going to go home after this weekend as champions and we’re going to wipe the slate clean just like we have to,” Schatz said. “These guys are going to start working hard – they’ve already started working hard for next year. So you come back out and hope you can better yourself next year. That’s going to be awfully tough but the group of guys that Tony Stewart has assembled, there wouldn’t be a better group of guys to do it with. These guys are absolutely phenomenal. I’m looking forward to getting to that first race in Florida now.”

For 28 laps of final night of the Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway Joey Saldana had to hold back the relentless pressure of a determined Donny Schatz .Covering Schatz’s every move, up high and right thru to the Bottom the Motter equipment #71 had answers for #15 car of Schatz
Lap 29 and Schatz’s skill in the heavy traffic was once again the telling factor as he worked his way past Saldana and into the race lead .
Behind Schatz and Saldana a mighty tussle was raging between Madsen, Sweet and Stewart and it went the race distance before it was resolved with Madsen finally fighting off a late made slide job by Stewart
While Schatz and Stewart are the two stand outs for this season the pace and consistency of Saldana and Madsen must be edging both drivers closer to their next Outlaw win.

Here are the driver’s comments from the post race presentations
Donny Schatz

“It’s been a phenomenal year – hats off to this whole Bad Boy Buggies, Chevrolet Performance team,” Schatz said. “I honestly think I’m getting too old to drive like a nut and that’s what I needed to do there. I had a lot of fun but I’m not in as good a shape as I think I am. I’m played out right now.”
“I had a lot of fun. Racing with (Joey Saldana), he’s a world class racer. It’s fun to be able to race with him and not have somebody turn on you and do all sorts of weird stuff. We were just very glad to get by him.”
Joey Saldana
“Last night we had a good car and I felt like I probably drove too easy just to conserve and get a good finish,” Saldana said. “Tonight, I gave it everything I had. I was trying. I was top, middle, bottom trying to make his life miserable. Obviously, he’s just waiting for you to make a mistake. He just chomps on you and see you later.”

“If you can be on the front straightaway with the World of Outlaws at the end of the night it’s a great accomplishment,” Saldana said. “You did a lot as a team. This weekend we were really solid every single night – qualifying, heat race, dash, and feature. Definitely very positive for the whole Motter team – looking forward to finishing out the year.”
Kerry Madsen
“I was around the bottom there and I didn’t think I had time to get to the top and go past Joey so I decided to hold my line,” Madsen said. “(Stewart) got beside me going down the backstretch and made a normal slide job and he was mad, but that’s just racing. Glad to get a podium with the American Racing Custom Wheels “
“It was a great run. I thought we had something for (Donny) there and it just didn’t work out our way. But I had a great racecar and really enjoyed the race and we’ll take that and move on.

COTTAGE GROVE, Oregon. – Sept. 9, 2015 –Fresh from scoring his 200th WoO win Donny Schatz continued his dazzling form to close out win 28 for the season earlier tonight at the site of his very first Outlaw win 17 years ago
The night started out in the most positive way for Daryn Pittman .Fast time in qualifying , strong heat result and a win in the vital dash secured the all important pole position for the 35 lap A main .
With Schatz in such commanding form it is hard to imagine that the race nerves of Pittman would be anything but calm with the knowledge that Schatz will be a danger no matter how much your pole spot offers.
Pittman and Saldana shared the front row with Schatz and Stewart slotted in behind them .As expected Pittman raced to the early lead but soon after lap one Schatz had taken command.

The Cottage Grove track was very racy and lapped traffic and a series of cautions should have been made to order for Pittman and Stewart but Schatz battled hard through the traffic to keep the chasers at bay.
Night after night, track after track and the hunger and determination of the Donny Schatz/Tony Stewart combination is there for l the teams to see. Finishing second to Schatz might be some consolation but there is no doubting the respect and admiration the Outlaws have for the Champion from Fargo North Dakota.Donny Schatz always has time for his young fans, true Champion!

Driver post race interviews

Donny Schatz “”Every one you win is incredible. You never know when it’s going to be your last so I’m just enjoying the hell out of it at the moment,” Schatz said. “This is the place I got my first win so it’s always had a special place in my heart and I’m glad to be able to win here again tonight.”You just have to get through there the best that you can,” said Schatz, who drives for Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing. “It forces you to change your line up a little bit. A lot of those guys want to be on the bottom so I had to try to run around the top. I just didn’t seem to have as much speed there… It was awful snug the whole race and just kept getting better and better and better. That’s what we strive for to make the thing better as the race goes on and be as good as we can at the end.”

Daryn Pittman “”For whatever reason, the first five laps, I was really struggling and just had no grip,” Pittman said. “The longer the race went I felt like my car got better. The race was really getting good there before that caution or red there in the middle. We were right there in heavy lap traffic and had a shot but (Donny) doesn’t make many mistakes.”Pittman said Cottage Grove has not historically been a good track for him, so he was happy to get the podium finish.”It was a lot of fun,” Pittman said. “You don’t want to run second but I haven’t had very many fun seconds this year.”

Shane Stewart “”Me and Brad had a pretty good race there in the middle of the race and I could see him a couple of times, I just needed to hit my marks around the bottom,” Stewart said.”Happy with a podium finish and we’ll carry this momentum into Gold Cup and hopefully we can get some wins there and Antioch and on into the East,” Stewart said.

Donny Schatz makes 200 career  WoO wins
ELMA, Wash. – Sept. 7, 2015 Grays Harbour Speedway and Donny Schatz passed race leader Paul McMahan in the closing laps to secure his 27th win for the season and his 200th  career WoO win .Schatz ‘s first WoO win was at Cottage Grove Speedway in 1998.
This amazing milestone see Schatz become only the third Outlaw to achieve the 200 win mark .Steve Kinser leads with 577 followed by Sammy Swindell 294.

Donny Schatz makes it 200 Outlaw win at Grays harbour
Paul McMahan started on the pole with Brad Sweet alongside .McMahan did not assume the race lead until lap 15 and managed to work the rough track and handle the traffic while maintaining his lead over Schatz until lap 28 .Then as has happened many times Schatz finds a way around at the pointy end of the race .Certainly the race cautions and the late race traffic assisted Schatz to find his way onto McMahan’s tail and once there the result was predictable.

McMahan finished second with Shane Stewart taking the final podium position . The post race interviews  with a modest Schatz ,disappointed but generious McMahan and Shane Stewart.

27 wins so far in 2015, 19 shows remaining, just how many wins will the  racer from Fargo North Dakota end the season with? The Outlaws next show is at Cottage Grove Speedway Oregon .Leading into the Cottage Grove show Schatz leads Shane Stewart by 422 points and Aussie Kerry Madsen a further 129 adrift of Stewart in third position.

It’s done Madsen back in winners circle

Madsen at Junction Speedway

Madsen at Junction Speedway

McCool Junction Nebraska is where Kerry Madsen’s luck finally changes .After 67 Outlaw shows without a race win his Knoxville form followed the St Marys racer to Junction Speedway .A solid early program saw Madsen make the Dash then transform that to pole alongside Schatz for the main event.
Many times this year Madsen had had the front row but has been unable to convert his efforts into race wins. During 2014 Madsen held top spot on the podium 6 times
Madsen drove into an early race lead, a lead he would maintain for the entire 30 laps. Schatz was the early challenger to Madsen but the only caution on lap 11 would offer Saldana the chance to do what many have failed to do, pass and keep his position over the 2014 defending WoO and nine times Knoxville Champion.

Kerry Madsen in the #29

Kerry Madsen in the #29

By lap 18 Madsen started to confront the traffic and Saldana took the opportunity to close on the #29 racecar. Was that monkey gonna hang on to Madsen or would he dispose of it quickly .Madsen was not going to be denied his maiden 2015 win and held onto his 1.30 second lead and crossed the stripe to the delight of all Kerry Madsen fans and his American Racing Custom Wheels team.
Kerry Madsen “We got on a roll last year and somehow we got off it,” Madsen said. “And the last month we have been working so hard to try to get our racecars better and we had a great week last week and tonight. You can just never feel complacent when you’re on the front row with Donny. I was pushing hard, there probably wasn’t really another line, but you’re just expecting some big slide job. So every lap you drive as hard as you can. Just great to get the result.”

“I felt like we had a really good car, it just came up short,” Saldana said. “We’ll take it and move on to the next race. We’re a consistent car, we’ve just got to get a little bit better and a little out here is hard to do. We’ve just got to keep digging, doing what we’re doing
Donny Schatz “We were fast there at the end of the night and were able to get up to Joe,” said Schatz, who closed out the night with a third place finish. “It wasn’t our best performance in a long time but we’ll take it and lick our wounds and go on to the next one.”

Jeremy Elliott from pennlive.com reports the top money earners for the Sprintcar Month of Money. The list was compiled from all the big events, World of Outlaws, All Star Circuit of Champions and the National Sprint league. The 360 Nationals and all the local Central Pennsylvania. It’s not surprising that the top three in this list sit on top of the WoO standings after Knoxville.

Donny Schatz heads the Month of Money list with earning of US$219.00 followed by Shane Stewart with US$137,200 and Knoxville runner up Aussie Kerry Madsen with US$109.550.

The 35 top earner for the Month of money includes three other Australians Lynton Jeffrey with UA$31, 625, Ian Madsen US$22,150 and Jamie Veal US$18,375.Sounds like a lot of loot, but to prepare and run a Sprintcar team is massively expensive and without the help of their local supporters and sponsors it would not be possible.

Kevin Swindell is still in hospital after his crash earlier in the week ,Swindell is expected to undergo another operation on Monday after which will be a long road back to full recovery .Takingspeedway.com wishes Kevin all the best for his recovery

But it’s all about the Final and right from the start the question was posed can Donny Schatz taken out his 9th Title in 10 year. From the moment the Knoxville flagman, Doug Green released his grasp on the green flag Schatz was well and truly on the way .Jumping the Aussie Kerry Madsen at the start Schatz started to prepare the foundation for his 9th Knoxville National Title. Madsen chased hard early closing in on the tail of the Bad Boy Buggies #15 but unable to gain the vital pass.

With Schatz wheeling out in front Madsen now had to deal with a fast arriving Lasoski in the Go Muddy.com #2.
The Go Muddy.com no 2 was working the Knoxville cushion over and started to trade second with Madsen. Lap 16 and Jason Johnson’s #41 shredded his left rear tire and the yellow comes out.

The caution offered the chasers their first real opportunity to threaten the reigning Champ but as we have come to expect the Champ from Fargo North Dakota was right up to the challenge leaving Madsen and Lasoski to their personal battle .Lap 25 and the “Dude” made second his as the race reach the half way point and the fuel stop.

After the 5 minute fuel stop Schatz took on the high side of the track and started to gap Lasoski as Madsen gained momentum forcing Lasoski to defend his 2nd position. Both Madsen and the forth place Sweet worked high on the cushion with the “Dude” stuck on the bottom. By lap 32, both Madsen and Sweet had passed the GO Muddy.com #2, Madsen around the top and Sweet through on the bottom.

After dealing with Lasoski , Madsen now had the threat of Brad Sweet to take his attention from chasing down Schatz. The gap between Schatz and Madsen had squeezed out to 2.204 second before the red came out to cover Pau McMahan who slipped the cushion on lap 35.
Schatz was back on the pace quickly leaving Madsen and Sweet at it for second .It was a hot battle between the two with them disputing second , their pace kept them within striking distance of the #15.

Madsen had to work hard to keep Sweet behind and both were hoping the coming traffic would offer one final chance to jump the #15. Lap 48 and the final chance was opening up with Schatz appearing to be boxed in the lapped traffic.
Not often does Schatz fall in traffic and this was not going to be one of those day , with the finishing line in sight the might of the Bad Boys Buggies/TSR/Chevrolet Performance #15 would not be denied and the World of Outlaws Champion would become a 9 times Knoxville Champion .Kerry Madsen with all the aggression, determination that fans have come to expect crossed the stripe 1.363 sec behind the #15. Brad Sweet in the Kasey Kahne Racing and the Ollie’s Bargain Barn Outlet #49.

The Knoxville Nationals is the Sprintcar Title they all want, the performance of the Tony Stewart/Donny Schatz partnership continually ticks every box, and every race meeting making the task of their competition almost impossible .The constancy of this team is unmatched in modern motor sport. While they have many critics, most with little knowledge their performance speaks loud and clear.

: “It’s not the traffic that was bothering me. It was the restarts. It’s my job to get through traffic. If I can’t then I’m probably going to lose my job. The past couple weeks, seem like people get a run on you and can slide you, so you just had to do something different. One time I’d go to the bottom, one time I’d go to the top and keep mixing it up, but it’s hard to do that without mixing yourself up.

The boss was here tonight. Can’t thank him [Tony Stewart] enough for all the support to allow us to be with Bad Boy Buggies, Chevrolet Performance, and all our marketing partners to do what we love to do.”

“I tried as hard as possible to get it done. I got behind him in dirty air and was just was jumping around on the cushion like an idiot, but I wasn’t going to leave anything on the table,” said Madsen. “I thought it was on there. I thought I had a quicker car and I just apologize for not getting the job done but he didn’t make a mistake the last 15 laps. I was ready to pounce, but it didn’t happen.”
Brad Sweet: “I tell you what this is a huge step in the right direction for Kasey Kahne Racing and the Ollie’s Bargain Barn Outlet. The car was really good. We hit on some stuff at the Front Row Challenge and we carried some momentum into here and when the time to hit it right in the A-Main was right, we hit it. I really didn’t want to see those yellows because I really felt like we were more maneuverable than the guys in front of us, but hats off to Donny. He makes it really hard to win this race.”

Early on it was Lasoski who took the lead and it was left to McCarl to chase Jason Johnson down for thenumber 2 spot .McCarl closed onto the back of the Priority Aviation No. 41 entry but Johnson would hold his ground. McCarl tried to make the pass on laps 11 and 12 but it  lap 13 that saw McCarl pass into the runner up position
A red for Brooke Tatnell on lap 14 and the restart was just what McCarl needed , single file to the to the starters green and McCarl runs high and job done by turn three on lap 15 and McCarl goes into the race lead

.At the post race interview McCarl was asked about his pass on the Dude, McCarl “, “Well, I just knew what he was doing on those restarts, and what he did to Jason. He was eating that top up, and I hadn’t been to the top. We had a start, gave me a chance to practice it, and on the other restart I perfected it a little better, and I think he missed it a little bit.”
Lasoski held his runner up position to the flag with Jason Johnson claiming the final podium. The podium was Johnson’s third World of Outlaw podium since his return from injury.

Lasoski at the press interview “, “We got good points, just got beat by a good driver, and a good car, that’s all you can say. He had a good pace, and a lot of times, it’s better to be running second. He did what he had to do, and he just got beat.”

Jason Johnson at the press interviews “I tell you what; these Priority Aviation guys have been working their tails off this week. I just can’t say enough about this race team. Phillip and Cole have done a great job. We have a great group of supporters here, and to be on the podium on a prelim night; we’re pretty pleased,” said Johnson who will start ninth in Saturday’s feature event.
